The Mackenzie family, owners of The Dalmore distillery for almost a century, provides the inspiration for The Dalmore’s iconic stag head logo and its motto “I Shine, Not Burn” which is also the clan motto.

The launch will celebrate the single act of courage that an ancestor of Clan Mackenzie made when saving King Alexander III in 1263 from being gored by a stag, a scene that is depicted in the painting.

The partnership aims to raise funds to help refurbish and maintain Castle Leod and to support a range of activities organised by The Clan Mackenzie Society of Scotland & The UK.

According to The Dalmore’s master distiller Richard Paterson this is the first step of a long-term commitment, and the brand is hoping to raise a seven figure sum in the next 10 years to help protect this important piece of Scottish history.

“Whether you are a Mackenzie or not, with only 3,000 bottles available globally, this is your chance to own a little piece of Scottish history.

I have been nurturing casks at The Dalmore and monitoring their progress for some four decades. The challenge to craft a whisky fit for the Earl and all Mackenzies was an inspiration. I am proud to be able to help the clan by creating a whisky with a regal heritage and one which is truly fit for a king…….as well as a Clan Chief!”

Here is a short video showcasing The Dalmore Mackenzie launch at the National Gallery of Scotland.

This 18 year old expression (which is replacing the much-loved 15yo) of Laphroaig is made in limited quantities each year and savoured by a fortunate few. A soft, sweet and spicy Islay peat smoke greets you when you first open the bottle. The immediate taste is an oak sweetness, from 18 years in the barrel. A faint hint of the sea can be detected, testimony to its time maturing on the remote island of Islay.

Bottled at 48% ABV and non-chill filtered for a depth of taste and texture.

A gold medal-winner at the International Wine & Spirits Competition, this unique concoction is a 100% Single Grain Irish whiskey, with no malt content at all.

Sweet, appetising and organic nose. Sweet with vanilla, dried banana chips, and coconut oil. Bourbon-y sweetness that gets the mouth wet in anticipation. Organic like fresh corn, green tomatoes, chlorophyll.

Mmm, buttery and fruity. Toasty. Caramel. Almonds with a twist of watery lemonade. Honeyed finish with a tinge of those organic notes found on the nose.

Summary:

Superficial stuff first, I like the bottle design (like the Arran Anniversary shape) and the cork is fat and tight giving a nice loud sssquuueeepft when you open it. This is a light, fresh, and invigorating whisky that is perfect for a summer day. Very bourbon-y without any of the harder tannins but might be a bit sweet and cloying for some people or even for some moods. Could do well in a cocktail in place of bourbon, or even rum. Yet more evidence that great things can come from the world of grain whisk(e)y.

Malt peated with 35ppm of phenolic flavour compounds passes this flavour into the spirit. The malt is ground, washed several times with hot water which is then fermented producing wash.

A very highly rated whisky, coming top of the pops in a number of expert blind tastings in the past. At 17 years old the whisky has benefited from greater exposure to the cask and the mature characteristics that this brings. A more concentrated but well balanced palate of flavours is evident whilst retaining the clean unpeated taste of the 10 year old product.
The product is more suited to an after-dinner style of drink with the oak lactones more prevalent.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Medium golden, clear and bright.
Nose: Soft, mature, mellow oak and apple fruitiness.
Palate: Rich, full oak and fruit, very long, rich finish.

Nose
Very clean nose: the oak is minimal with honeyed-grassy malt. Beguiling.

Palate
A fabulous, honey-sweet infusion of tender malty notes do take on a waxy middle.

Finish
Bitter-sweet and still waxy with mounting vanilla and even a late hint of cocoa.

Comment
By no means the most complex whisky on the market, but unquestionably one of the most elegant and charming.

Jim Murray

A swish new bottle for what has always been one of the best of Glenmorangie’s core range. Fans may be disappointed at the price hike, which was unfortunately out of our control — this is what happens when brands are “repositioned” for the luxury market.

Aroma: The cornucopia of an autumn harvest festival table describes the overflowing abundance of arresting aromas that tantalise at the first nose of Glenmorangie 18 Years Old. The rich, resinous quality of nuts cascades into a crisp toffee sweetness of crème brulée, merging with caressingly smooth, creamy vanilla. Hints of vibrant oranges & lemons are found. Crunchy textured walnuts follow, oozing into golden honeycomb that trickles over sun-ripened sticky dates. Then sparkling floral tones emerge, taking the edge off any cloying sweetness, with the green, almost herbal bouquet of geranium, tempered with musky jasmine and the bright, sharp clarity of narcissus.

With water, 18 Years Old reveals a rich oaken, balsamic character that yields to soft vanilla. At this moment, the signature Glenmorangie fruity complex reveals itself in golden apricots and dates mingled with hazelnuts.

Taste: Glenmorangie 18 Years Old slips like silk over the tongue with a full, rounded flavour, starting with grapefruit & orange. The palate is then entranced with an accord of melting honey, creamy malt and aromatic florals that segue into the warm, syrupy nuttiness of hazelnuts and walnuts from the Oloroso sherry casks in which the whisky is matured. Savour the rich, sticky date and fig flavours as they are heightened by the unexpected caress of woodsmoke.

Finish: Lingering and enticing with the subtle sweetness of dried fruit and the nutty dryness of sherry.
