Suntory Hakushu 1989, TWE 10th Anniversary, Sherry Cask
This Hakushu 1989 single cask comes from a sherry butt, which is very rare (it’s probably the second single cask sherry release ever). It has a very dark, mahogany colour.
A perfectly balanced sherry bomb – a Japanese Macallan, as it were. On the other hand, I still prefer the Longmorn 1969, which is just as sherried but less dry and more complex (although it’s older). This Hakushu 1989 is one of the Gold Medal winners...

I am glad you liked it Jens! Its such a truly wonderful expression and truly shows what the Japanese distilleries are capable of!
Nose: I poured this gem into a glas a let it stay for while before tasting it. I was first amazed by to dark, dark color and then how the room was filled by a lovely aroma of sherry whisky and wood, I have never noticed this before.
As of the high strength this baby really needs some cautions, don’t dip your nose to deep into the glas. Lots of sherry of course and citrus, oak and fudge and plums.
Mouth: Again lots of sherry, lots of sweetness. A thick (as in good) wooden dryness with tones of citrus, oak. Lots of strength but still amazing taste. The finish is fine and the taste stays for about 5 minutes. Only had a small sample so no added water for this one.
Context & summary: I had this whisky after not tasting whisky for about two months. This was the whisky I had to celebrate the birth of my newborn son! This whisky is magic, really a amazing dram which works great a chilly autumn evening when celebrating.
