Port Ellen Distillery was based on the isle of Islay, Scotland and founded by Alexander Mackay.
The distillery was built in the 1825. The distillery closed in 1983, although supplies of the malt are still available. The distillery houses a malting which continues to supply all Islay distilleries, as per an agreement signed in 1987. Due to the closing of the distillery, Port Ellen whisky is becoming more and more collectible.
Prices for Port Ellen have increased steadily over the last decade as the reputation of the distillery grows and supplies dwindle. The first official bottling from Diageo, released in 2001, has more than trebled in price to around £350 at the time of writing, while older independent bottlings can now fetch prices up to £500-£600.
This Port Ellen was distilled on the 2nd of February 1983 (just a few months before the distillery closed for good) The whisky has been aged in wine treated butt number 231 for 27 years before bottling on the 9th April 2010. Bottled by Signatory at cask strength, a release of only 501 individually numbered bottles.
A note about the Wine treated butt, according to kallaskander it means
…wine treated means a cask which has not held wine before is filled with wine or sherry for some time to infuse these aromas into the wood. Sometimes old casks which have been used several times were wine treated…
Nose: Light fragrance. I can nose citrus and vanilla. At first I thought the nose was light but after keeping the Port Ellen in the glas it open up, lovely peaty but ballanced. Quite medicinal but gives promises for a great ride.
Mouth: Start with medicinal touch, after a while, just like the nose it opens up and explodes in balance of oak, peat and citrus sweets.
Finish: Has a really nice finish. Love the balance between peat and vanilla.
Context: I had this together with a Hanyu Ichiro’s Malt, 1991, Five of Clubs, both are exceptional but loved the Ichiro more, maybe I’m bigger fan of the sherry and sweets than the peaty side of the Port Ellen.

This one come with some candy. Nice but nothing special. My lip shiver, in a good way…
