Awarded Best Single Malt in the World in 2005 by Whisky Magazine, Original Cask Strength Laphroaig is bottled at natural distillery strength with all the depth of genuine taste and texture normally associated with sampling whisky at source.
Laphroaig mature the whiskies in seasoned oak barrels, charred before filling to impart a slight sweet vanilla nuttiness. Original Cask Strength Laphroaig is barrier-filtered only just, to remove the small char particles present. This means you will enjoy Laphroaig exactly as we made it. In extremes of temperature and when you add water it may appear a little cloudy – this is the natural condition of a malt of such a peaty pungence and uncompromising purity.
Adding a little water releases a rich aroma of peat smoke with some sweetness and strong hints of the sea.

Nose
The nose is sweet and lots of wood, smoke, peat and toffee. There is some prickly tones as the whisky is quite strong.
Mouth
The first impression is big, warm, and lots of smoke and peat. I really love the strong taste together with dry and peaty feeling. The taste stays for quite a long time. I am amazed that I can even feel some Laphroaig taste the next day.
Summary
I haven’t tasted that many Laphroigs before, if I compare this one to the normal 10yo Laphroaig this bottle is a huge treat. Lots of taste and much more complex. I can agree with Whisky Magazine who voted this whisky ‘best of best’ in the Single Malt category in 2005. Please note that this bottle can be quite hard to find in stores but is still produced by Laphroaig.
Context
I got this bottle from a friend of mine who visited Laphroig a few years ago. The bottle i got was the one litre version. I first tried the Laphroaig with him and it was not until this weekend I had a chance to sit down and ‘taste’ it more and write some notes about it. I had a some chocolate desert and espresso before the tasting which might have some impact on the tasting notes.
