Ardbeg Rollercoaster

On February 15th Ardbeg Rollercoaster will be made available through the Ardbeg site. It is a vatting of 10 casks, one from each year between 1997 and 2006, put together co celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Ardbeg Committee. It is bottled at 57.3% and it will cost around £50.

Bowmore 12 Years

This is a new packaging of the islay’s ‘medium-peated’ malt. It has a clear iodine character with lots of pepper and yet the malt is balanced and smooth as well as smoky.

Ardbeg 10 Years

Ardbeg Ten Years Old is a very special bottling for the Ardbeg distillery as it is the first non-chill filtered whisky in the Ardbeg range. Chill filtering isn‘t a bad thing, in fact it created real consistency of product when the whisky industry was a little more ‘hap-hazard‘ than it is today. Ardbeg Ten Years Old is whisky with none of the goodness taken out and as good as straight from the cask.

Auchentoshan 12 Years

Replacing the now extinct 10 year old is this sumptiously packaged 12 year old version of the triple-distilled Lowland. Happily they’ve improved on the 10, being richer, spicier and with more sherry influence.

Glen Ord 25 YO

Full of flavour and very appetising indeed, this is the second special release from the only Northern Highlands distillery to retain its own maltings. Matured in a mixture of American and European Oak casks, there are only 3600 numbered bottles worldwide. Often described as “perilously drinkable”, it has only been available as a single malt in the last ten years and it is presented in a unique, hand etched Glen Ord decanter. Glen Ord is fresh, lively with well balanced flavours of honey and lemon juice, some acidity and dry spices. The finish is medium lenghth crisp, smoky and dry. Tremendous depth of flavour and balance, prompting Jim Murray to award this 95 points in his Whisky Bible.

Laphroaig 40 YO, 1960

Produced using distilling methods first established in 1815, Laphroaig 40 Year Old was laid down by the only lady distillers and distillery owners, Bessie Williamson. Known and respected for her vision and love of Laphroaig, Bessie used European oak to mature this particular vintage rather than the American oak Bourbon casks which are more commonly used today.

The barrels have lain undisturbed in Warehouse No. 1, the oldest maturation building at Laphroaig, which is sited at the edge of the sea. During its 40 years in the warehouse, a percentage of the maturing whisky has been lost due to evaporation and replaced by the salt-laden air of Laphroaig Bay. The resulting rich and mellow whisky has been bottled at its original cask strength

Laphroaig 25 YO

Here’s the new large batch Laphroaig, unexpectedly bottled at 40%. A bit strange when you know the difference that just 3 more percents can make to the regular 10yo. This is a very mellow taste with pretty delicate peat, some baked apple notes and a gentle nuttiness.

Laphroaig 15 YO

The distillers describe this whisky as “Mildly smoky, with sweet, warm undertones — and just a hint of the sea.” Always bottled in limited quantities and replaced by the 18 year old in March 2009. Faintly salty. Laphroaig 15yo is a smoother and more elegant elder sibling to the robust 10 year-old.

Balblair Sherry Cask 17 Years

Yellow and Amber with amontillado sherry hue with a nose of Digestive biscuits and sweet soda bread. Fresh and youthful. The palate is wonderful. Lemon meringue pie. Sweet. Engaging.
To conclude it, a real beauty from this ever popular distillery.
